Description:
The Marian House is a program of Catholic Charities of Colorado Springs. The soup kitchen serves a hot, nutritious meal every day, 365 days a year. Monday through Saturday, meals are served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, a breakfast is served from 8:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. 35 to 40 volunteers are required daily to serve over 600 people on most days. Volunteers are needed to prepare, cook, serve, and clean-up the main meal daily. Volunteers are also need at the Hanifen Center at Marian House which provides poverty reduction services to help move our guests to a greater level of self-sufficiency. Services include Community Outreach, where volunteers help pick up and deliver donations of clothing, food and household goods & services. Client Services operates a clothing closet and uses volunteers to sort and distribute clothing, sleeping bags and tarps, shoes, etc. The Life Support Center helps families with children with basic necessities such as formula, baby food, diapers, clothing, etc. Volunteers assist in sorting & distributing these items.
History:
Catholic Charities has been serving the Colorado Springs community since 1968 and has been operating the Marian House Soup kitchen since 1985. In June 2009, the new soup kitchen opening its doors and the number of people coming to us for a hot meal has increase over 40% in just the past 12 months. It is located at 14 West Bijou Street. The Marian House is the only soup kitchen in the Pikes Peak region that offers a hot meal 365 days of the year. Marian House client Services began in 1990 and Community Outreach began in 2002. The Life Support Center became part of Catholic Charities in 1999, but existed as an independent agency since 1976.
